What’s Shaking? An Introduction to Sid
Share
I often get asked about the seagull in the logo, well it's time to give a few details, although they are a little sketchy. Below is what I do know about Sid though
He showed up one day, uninvited and completely unbothered, like he’d always been here. No grand entrance. No explanation. Just landed, looked around, and made himself at home. That’s Sid for you.
He’s often mistaken for a Cornish Chough, but I can confirm he is just a feral seagull. Why is he always shown in silhouette? Not because he’s camera shy (though he’ll pretend he is), but because attention just seems to follow him. It’s the curse of the effortlessly cool and it keeps a little mystery about him.
Sid has had a life filled with misadventure and these days, you’ll catch Sid floating around Newquay, his unofficial territory. He hangs out at the Killacourt like he owns the joint, and is often found outside Sainsbury’s charming (stealing) snacks off unsuspecting holidaymakers. He doesn’t go near the harbour unless it’s to meet his “connect” before a big night out. And when he disappears for weeks at a time, no one questions it. He always returns with a cheeky “what’s shaking?” and just picks up like nothing happened.
He doesn’t ask for much. A long-sleeve OG Logo tee. A bit of misadventure. A chance to wind someone up. He’s got a personality the size of the Atlantic and full of stories.
The Man, the Myth, the Mascot
He’s more than just a seagull though. Sid's a part of the Surf City Cycles family, like that one mate we all have, no one’s sure how they joined the crew, but you wouldn’t change it for the world. He’s part mascot, part mentor, part meddler. He’s the one reminding me to pack gear for market days, photo shoots, or impromptu surf checks (not always reliable mind).
He’s not the kind of guy to seek out trouble, but it seems to have his postcode.
Sid’s Circle – The Cast of Characters
Behind every chaotic gull is a crew of equally colourful misfits. Some are still around. Others live on in legend. All of them helped shape the Sid we know and shake our heads at today.
Limpwrist
The original ride-or-die. Loyal, discreet, and once talked Sid out of a standoff with a Biffa lorry. No one knows where Limpwrist is now, but Sid always reckons he’ll reappear “just when I need him, probably wearing stolen sunglasses.”
Really!?
That’s the name. That’s also the reaction. A mystery wrapped in a nickname. You’ll never get the full story—unless you are the story. If you know, you know.
Slaphead
The silent operator. Not much for chat, but a master of disappearing just before it all kicks off. Sid says he once escaped a rooftop BBQ gone wrong using only a picnic blanket and an old copy of the Newquay Voice.
Kenty
The fixer. Sid’s go-to for “situations,” whether that’s building a surfboard rack out of coat hangers or helping smuggle a pizza past the team at Pizza Jockeys. Doesn’t ask questions, just gets it done.
Kiwi
Once a wildcard, now a zen master. Lives clean, dips daily, reads self-help books with covers torn off. Still has Sid’s respect. “He’s seen things,” Sid says. “And now he makes kombucha.”
That’s it for this week. Stay tuned in The Garage for more Sid stories, misadventures, and special appearances. If you’ve ever spotted him, tag us. If you’ve got a story, send it in. Just don’t expect a straight answer, this is Sid we’re talking about.
